ATEX Weighing-Weighing Systems in Hazardous Areas

Installation of weighing systems in designated hazardous areas must be carried out by suitably qualified personnel.

Weightron provides a range of ATEX certified load cells and weight indicators, suitable for ATEX weighing in Zones 0, 1 & 2 (gases) and 20, 21 & 22 (dust). For this specialist area of weighing, we work with ATEX compliant process contractors and engineers.

Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dust. If there is enough of the substance, mixed with air, then all that is needed is a source of ignition to cause an explosion.

ATEX is the name commonly given to the two European Directives for controlling explosive atmospheres:

  • Directive 2014/34/EU covers equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The directive defines the essential health and safety requirements and conformity assessment procedures to be applied before products are placed on the EU market. It is aligned with the new legislative framework policy and it is applicable from 20 April 2016, replacing the previous Directive 94/9/EC.
  • Directive 99/92/EC (also known as ‘ATEX 137’ or the ‘ATEX Workplace Directive’) on minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.

In Great Britain, the requirements of Directive 99/92/EC were put into effect through regulations 7 and 11 of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
