Chief ministers called upon by Centre to discuss decriminalization in legal metrology

A letter was addressed to all the ministers on 25th June by the  Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Piyush Goyal. According to the letter, the Government of India is taking measures to enhance ease of doing business and in the process of that, some of the old laws have been repealed and some need a review. The letter was written to invite the concerned ministers of all States/UTs on 2nd July 2021 at 4:00 PM on a  VC meeting. The Meeting’s objective would be to discuss the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and hence the ministers are requested to invite the ministers dealing with the subject of the Legal Metrology Act,2009 in their respective states.

As per the letter, A series of extensive deliberations on decriminalizing provisions of the Legal Metrology Act 2009 have been held with stakeholders including the State Governments, Industries and Consumer Organisations. Also, the department had requested State Governments to re-examine/review their comments on all the provisions of the aforesaid act, however, there has been no significant progress. We have high expectations from the meeting as this is a major step taken by the Government of India to transform the Indian Weighing Industry.
