Axtec, the axle weighing specialist, has launched AVID (Automatic Vehicle ID), an innovative system that uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to identify vehicles during the weighing process. AVID eliminates the need for drivers to manually input vehicle identification data, thus streamlining operations while dramatically improving data accuracy.
AVID represents another significant step in Axtec’s strategy to introduce connected technologies across its product range.
AVID addresses a critical issue in fleet weighing operations, as highlighted by a recent trial at a leading UK supermarket chain where only 33% of drivers entered any identification data, with just one-third of those entries containing accurate vehicle IDs. By automating the process, AVID ensures comprehensive and reliable data capture for every vehicle weighed, as well as saving time and effort.
The system features a camera typically mounted on the same post as the weighbridge indicator. This design ensures straightforward installation in most weighbridge set-ups where there is line-of-sight between the camera and vehicle. The same visibility requirements already exist for drivers to view the Large Remote Display throughout the weighing process, making AVID integration seamless at the vast majority of locations.
AVID has been engineered with backward compatibility in mind, working with existing Axtec Series 5000 and the latest Series 6000 Dynamic Weighbridges. While a software update may be required, the system has been designed to integrate with operators’ current weighbridge infrastructure, minimising both installation complexity and cost.
“Operators today need solutions that not only ensure compliance but also deliver actionable intelligence,” said Keith Gresham, Managing Director at Axtec. “By automating the vehicle identification process with AVID, we’re eliminating a major pain point for fleet operators.
“More broadly,” he said, “we’re now developing systems that communicate and share data seamlessly, creating an integrated ecosystem to deliver greater operational intelligence and assured compliance for transport operators. This connected approach reflects our commitment to moving beyond standalone weighing equipment and towards comprehensive solutions that address the industry’s evolving needs,” he said.
Axtec continues to build its reputation for innovative weighing solutions that help transport operators maintain legal compliance while maximising operational efficiency. The introduction of AVID follows the recent launch of CALM (Connected Axle Load Monitoring), demonstrating Axtec’s commitment to developing interconnected weighing technologies that provide transport operators with unprecedented visibility and control over their compliance management. Using AVID and CALM together, paper tickets can be eliminated; the whole data stream is electronic, accurate and instant. Transport managers can be alerted to a problem immediately, enabling prompt intervention.
