Legal Metrology Department Conducts Surprise Inspections at 370 jewellery showrooms in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: In a major drive to protect consumer interests, ensure transparency in trade, and enforce accurate weighing practices, the Legal Metrology Department has conducted a large-scale surprise inspection campaign across the state, covering nearly 370 gold and silver shops and jewellery showrooms.

The two-day inspection drive was carried out on January 2 and 3, 2026, across 25 districts of Gujarat, during which officials registered 253 prosecution cases and recovered ₹6.79 lakh as compounding fees on the spot.


According to the Legal Metrology Department, the compounding fees were collected immediately through e-POS, UPI-based digital payments, e-payment modes, and cheques, ensuring transparency in the process.


During the inspections, the highest number of checks were conducted in Ahmedabad, where 61 establishments were inspected and 22 cases were registered. This was followed by Bharuch–Narmada, where 25 cases were filed after inspecting 27 units. In Junagadh–Gir Somnath, 20 cases were registered from 21 inspections, while Bhavnagar/Botad saw 17 cases from 20 inspections, and Surat recorded 14 cases from 20 inspected units.


The drive also covered districts including Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Patan, Chhota Udepur, Tapi, Valsad, Dang, Navsari, Anand, Kheda, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Porbandar, Amreli, Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Surendranagar, Mehsana, Banaskantha (Palanpur), Sabarkantha (Himmatnagar), Aravalli (Modasa), Rajkot, and Morbi.


Common Irregularities Detected


Officials reported several violations of the Legal Metrology Act, including:


-Use of unverified and unstamped weighing instruments

-Providing less weight than prescribed

-Failure to carry out mandatory verification and stamping

-Keeping unstamped standard weights for accuracy checks

-Non-display of verification and authenticity certificates


Legal action was initiated against erring establishments as per applicable rules and provisions.
