Meghalaya: Exporters seek CBI probe into alleged weighbridge “scandal”

Several exporters have raised a demand for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged illegal activities at weighbridges operated by the Transport Department in East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.

Meghalaya: Exporters seek CBI probe into alleged weighbridge “scandal”

They claimed that operators are allowing overloaded trucks to pass without proper scrutiny, resulting in significant revenue losses for the state government and damage to roads.

The exporters, who ship limestone to Bangladesh, alleged that the weighbridges are being misused to benefit a select few, including some Transport Department officials, at the expense of public funds and infrastructure.

They also alleged that trucks carrying up to 12 metric tonnes of limestone are being allowed to pass without proper checks, causing significant damage to the roads.

The roads in the area, recently repaired by Hima Sohra, have deteriorated due to the passage of overloaded trucks and monsoon rains.

The local administration has stopped toll collection, leaving Hima Sohra without funds for road repairs, which amount to Rs 5 lakh every month, a report stated.
