New Rule Requires E-commerce Platforms to Clearly Display Country of Origin for Imported Products

Govt notified the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules introducing mandatory country-of-origin filters for imported products sold via e-commerce to improve consumer awareness.

On 13-2-2026, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution notified the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2026, with the aim of enhancing transparency for consumers purchasing goods on e-commerce platforms.
This amended provision will come into force on 1-7-2026.

This Amendment updates the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, that sets out the declarations and labelling requirements for packaged commodities sold in India.
It introduces Rule 6(10A), requiring every e-commerce entity selling imported products to:
Display such products through a searchable filter, and
Provide a sortable filter based on the country of origin
The amendment ensures that country-of-origin filters for imported products become a standard feature across e-commerce listings, strengthening consumer transparency.
‘Country-of-origin’ details often influence consumer choices related to quality, brand preference, and geopolitical considerations.
According to Rule 2(bd), Rule 2(be), and Rule 2(bf) of the 2011 Rules, the amendment applies to all major categories of e-commerce platforms, including:
Marketplace-based platforms
Inventory-based e-commerce entities
Foreign e-commerce companies operating in India
Direct-to-consumer brands selling imported goods online
Following the amendment, the e-commerce entities will now need to:
Identify imported products separately to apply Rule 6(10A).
Add a clear ‘country-of-origin’ field for imported items.
Enable search and sort filters based on country of origin.
Align backend product data with front end filters to ensure discoverability.
Update existing listings before 1-7-2026.
This requirement strengthens consumer transparency by making the country of origin of imported goods sold through e-commerce platforms easier to locate and assess through country-of-origin filters for imported products.
