Trichy: Several fruit vendors on NSB Road in Trichy were found using unstamped and tampered weighing scales during an inspection conducted by the labour department and Fort police on Saturday.

Trichy
Officials seized 11 unstamped tabletop weighing scales, 51 counterweights and 13 non-standard weights.

The inspection carried out after customers complained that vendors were cheating them with faulty weighing scales. Ravichandran, a resident of Srirangam, said he purchased 2kg of rambutan from a vendor on the road but it weighed only 1.2kg later. After questioning the vendor, Ravichandran purchased another kilogram of fruit and got it weighed at another shop and found it weighed only 600g, leading to an argument with the vendor. Police intervened, warned the vendors and asked them to leave the spot. A video of the incident went viral on social media.

Subsequently, labour department officials conducted an inspection under the Legal Metrology Act on Saturday and seized 11 unstamped or inaccurate tabletop weighing scales, 51 counter weights and 13 non-stand weights.
