A prominent cosmetics manufacturer in the U.S. faced mounting inefficiencies in their pre-weigh operations. Outdated manual processes—such as handwritten tracking of ingredients, quantities, and staff activities—were leading to errors, poor traceability, and wasted time. To address these challenges, the company implemented an integrated weighing and software solution. By combining precision equipment with intelligent recipe management software, they achieved better process control, improved accuracy, and significant time savings.

The manufacturer regularly faced challenges in its pre-weigh department, struggling to monitor which employees processed individual batches and maintain accurate records of raw material types and quantities. Reliance on handwritten documentation often led to inconsistent and unclear data, making it difficult to ensure accuracy and traceability.
Additionally, there was no reliable system in place to verify whether staff were using the correct weighing equipment or following required safety protocols, such as proper use of PPE. These shortcomings created significant obstacles in maintaining process control, compliance standards, and operational efficiency.
The solution came in the form of a coordinated system using Minebea Intec’s ProRecipe XT® software, Signum® bench scales, and the Maxxis 5 weight controller. This combination provided full traceability, ensuring every ingredient was correctly identified, weighed, and logged digitally.
For recipes involving expensive ingredients, the manufacturer introduced a dual-signature verification system. This made employees jointly accountable, reducing errors and waste. Ingredient weights and batch data were automatically recorded and transferred to the company’s ERP system using the Maxxis 5, eliminating the need for manual entry.
The system also ensured employees used only the approved scales and adhered to SOPs, including PPE use and reviewing material safety data sheets. With these updates, the company quickly saw reduced waste, improved efficiency, and a transparent overview of the entire pre-weigh process.
Sebastian Pedross, Manager of Product Management for Industrial Scales, explained, “The level of precision required in cosmetics production rivals that of pharmaceutical manufacturing. With more than 150 years of experience across a variety of industries, we know how to tailor weighing solutions to each customer’s unique needs.”
John Keane, Sales Manager for North America, added, “When I saw the customer’s challenges, I was confident that our combined system would deliver the results they needed. In fact, the benefits exceeded expectations, with added cost savings due to reduced material waste.”
