New intelligent solution delivers legal-for-trade weight measurements directly from the machine
VOLVO Construction Equipment are expanding their portfolio of intelligent machine solutions with the introduction of Certifiable On-Board Weighing for Volvo wheel loaders. Fully integrated through Load Assist, the new solution delivers legal-for-trade weight measurements directly from the machine, reducing dependency on external weighbridges and third-party weighing systems, and providing the accuracy, reliability and compliance required for commercial use.
Joining the existing Volvo CE On-Board Weighing solution, which provides high-accuracy weight information designed to improve load optimization and productivity, Certifiable On-Board Weighing has been developed for customers who require certified accuracy for commercial use, particularly in operations where precision directly impacts profitability.
Jeany Morales Ylanan, service offer owner Load & Haul Assist at Volvo CE, explained: ‘Developed by Volvo, Certifiable On-Board Weighing delivers certifiable-ready accuracy and reliability designed to support legal-for-trade requirements. Fully integrated through Load Assist and the Volvo Co-Pilot interface, the system provides customers with a seamless, tamper-protected solution backed by Volvo’s proven expertise in on-board weighing technology.’
Certifiable On-Board Weighing is type-approved by an independent notified body according to OIML R51 and aligned with MID requirements (EU Directive 2014/32/EU), ensuring the system meets strict standards for measurement accuracy, data integrity and security.
Ms Ylanan continued: ‘Unlike external weighing systems, the Volvo solution is built directly into the machine’s digital platform. Operators can monitor weight in real time via the Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen, allowing them to adjust loads during operation without interrupting workflows.’
Using advanced sensors and intelligent software, the system compensates for machine movement, tilt, and operating conditions to deliver reliable weight measurements during loading. This allows certified weight to be measured directly in the loader, effectively turning the machine itself into the weighing point for the operation.
For customers, this means improved operational efficiency and reduced reliance on fixed weighing infrastructure. By optimizing each load, operators can avoid both underloading and overloading, helping to reduce fuel consumption, minimize machine wear, and prevent transport penalties.
When combined with Volvo Load Ticket, certified weight data can be digitally documented and transferred to office systems for reporting and billing. This allows customers to generate reliable load documentation and invoices directly from the machine, improving traceability and simplifying administrative workflows.
Certifiable On-Board Weighing is available for selected Volvo wheel loaders equipped with Volvo Co-Pilot 2.0 and the Volvo Load Assist On-Board Weighing system, including L110H2, L120H2, and L150H to L260H models in certain EU markets. The solution is being introduced market-by-market, depending on local certification requirements and dealer readiness to support installation, calibration, and certification processes with a local notified body.
