An awareness programme under the theme “Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection: The Journey Towards Viksit Bharat 2047”, was held on November 7, at Indoor Stadium, St. Joseph’s College (SJC), Jakhama.

The programme was organised by department of Commerce SJC in collaboration with department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Nagaland, with the aim at educating students on consumer rights, legal metrology, and importance of informed consumerism for a progressive India.
According to a DIPR report, special guest, joint secretary, department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Bendanglila, in her speech highlighted that ‘Legal Metrology’ plays essential yet often unnoticed role in ensuring fairness in everyday transactions, from weighing vegetables in markets to buying fuel at petrol pumps.
She stated that Legal Metrology Enforcement System works silently to maintain accuracy in weights and measures and to protect both consumers and traders from unfair practices. Illustrating common instances of cheating in measurements, she emphasised that inaccuracies in packaged goods or fuel are not merely unfair but unlawful, and thereby urged students to be vigilant consumers by checking weights, MRPs, and expiry dates, and to report any violations to concerned authorities.
She also encouraged them to spread awareness within their communities, noting that “small acts of awareness lead to big waves of change.”
Terming students as future torchbearers of honesty and fairness in society, she urged them to uphold principle that “every measure counts, and every citizen matters”, and reminded that a silent but critical system ensures consumers receive their rightful value, and encouraged everyone to support the mission of fairness, stating, “Fairness starts with accurate measurement”.
The report added that joint controller, department of LMCP, Limatoshi Jamir in his keynote address, said that Vikshik Bharat 2047 which means “Developed India” was the government’s vision to drive the mission of making India a completely developed nation by 2047.
Jamir thereby called upon all consumers to work hand in hand for developed India and urged participants to spread awareness on how to exercise consumer rights.
Resource person, addl. public prosecutor, Nagaland Lokayukta, Abraham, highlighted the key features of consumers’ protection Act 2019 and also stressed on importance of exercising consumers protection: right to safety, right to be informed, right to choose, right to be heard, right to seek redressal and right to consumer education.
The report added that the programme was chaired by former College Ambassador, Kepozo Kapuh, invocation offered by vice-principal (academic affairs), Dr. Sr. Thresiamma, while welcome address was delivered by head, department of Commerce, Moatemsu.
